There is a theological term called Penal Substitution which basically means we traded places with Jesus in the sense that He took our place, the place of one guilty of death for our sins, and we took His place, in that we were then declared "not guilty"! The Bible says, "He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ" [2 Cor 5:21]. What a wonderfully profound truth!
